What is CDN (Content Delivery Network)?

Content Delivery Network is a system of computers networked together across the internet that cooperate transparently to deliver content to end users. It is a policy for the reduction of traffic in the WAN (Internet/Intranet/Extranet) through a parallel network, based on Storage Nodes managed by intelligent re-direction protocols.It is mandatory when customers need to build new applications where bandwidth costs eat ''100%'' of the budget. Distance learning, multimedia corporate communication, database replication, software distribution are all the killer applications.

In Africa, and other developing regions, satellite today is the most flexible and least expensive media to support CDN because marginal bandwidth costs for every new node are equal to ''zero''. Moving contents (and traffic) to the network ''edge'' represent a growing trend: costs of ''storage'' decrease much faster than ''last mile'' connectivity costs.
